How do you do it?

This is an example of communication with students which some may say has been overtaken by Blackboard's gradebook - if we used it. Essays and coursework in the Law School are marked according to a feedback pro forma. In my case, which I understand to be unique in the Law School, I wordprocess my comments, including the mark, and produce an email merge so that each student receives an email with their feedback. We also print two copies of the forms for archive purposes.

Why do you do it?

I have been doing this since it first became technically possible around 20 years ago. I thought it might catch on, but it hasn't. The general pattern is to mark essays with a pen. Perhaps with wider publicity others might discover the merit of using a computer driven system for this task. If I need to say the same thing to more than one student, I can copy and paste - something you can't do with a pen.

Does it work?

It produces email-able, efficient, archivable, legible feedback, so yes.
