Law School,

What did you do?

Invited Industry Professionals to give feedback to Law School Students

Who is involved?

Jonathan Galloway, NLS Law School Staff

How do you do it?

The Law School invites solicitors and barristers from local law firms to assess students on their interview techniques in the first year of their course. The exercise takes a couple of hours and many local lawyers donate their time for free as a way of supporting the Law School, of giving back to the University where they themselves studied or as a way of supporting young lawyers early in their careers. The students work in pairs and the legal professionals, with strict assessment criteria provided by staff, score them on how they interview their prospective "clients". The students then get scores and tips on how to improve their feedback based on the experience of people who conduct these types of interviews every day.

Why do you do it?

The exercise helps the students to hone skills crucial for information-gathering in their professional roles as well as getting to meet potential employers and mentors.

Does it work?

The exercise helps to build links with local firms which have helped students to gain employment following their degrees and gives them a real insight into the sorts of skills they will need day-to-day in their professional lives.
