What did you do?

I am a filmmaker and Senior Lecturer who uses practice-based learning to teach students about theory and application of learning/skills

Who is involved?

Only myself and third year students

How do you do it?

I teach documentary theory and practice through practice-based learning. I use my own research and research unit (a film production unit) to support the learning of students both formally and informally.

Why do you do it?

In order to get students to understand the codes and conventions of filmmaking and storytelling, I give them the opportunity to learn new skills and apply them in the creation of their own pieces of work. They are able to reflect on these and also share their learning and practice with each other through weekly critiques. I also actively engage in a dialogue with students using my own research and works in progress as part of the teaching process. Examples of this can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/user/NewcastleDocumentary

Does it work?

Examples: Dear Tina, Thanks for all your wise words this semester, I really enjoyed the module and its definitely furthered my interest to want to go in to filmmaking as a career! I was wondering if I could come and speak to you about any career/ further education advice you could offer, some time this week. Best, Jack Hi Tina, I was wondering whether i could have you down as a referee on my CV? I've decided to try and make something of my self in the world of Documentaries and am applying myself to find work within the business to gain the necessary experience. Thanks for everything, it is fair to say that without your module I wouldn't know what to do with myself. Hope you are well! All the best, Theo Dear Tina, I just wanted to say a little thank you for everything this year! Very happy to let you know that I will be graduating with a 2.1! As I took on work experience at Bridge + Tunnel and you have tutored me for some time, I was wondering if you would mind me listing you as a reference on my CV? I hope you're well! All best, Maria Hi Tina, It is a long while since the Doc Film course earlier this year. The anxiety of the experience lives with me still! I do remember you saying that we would receive our own copies of the films we made. How do I go about getting a copy? (I know it was pretty dreadful but it is the only film I have made.............so far) Hope you are well, not working too hard and that you continue to inspire students as much as you did with our little group. I am missing being on the course. Martin -- Dear Tina, We got our marks back today and as you can guess I am over the moon! I am just emailing to say thank you for all the help you gave me along the way. I really enjoyed the module and its made me realise that I can do other things than just writing! It taught me a lot and was a great experience, so just thank you again. Best wishes, Abi Hi Tina It's Kate (speccy blonde) from the BFI Screenwriting Academy - I hope I'm using the right email address! Firstly, I just wanted to say thank you for the talk you gave. I left the cinema with that excited, fluttery, "I'm going to go create something" feeling. It was especially good to hear from a woman, seeing as I've found industry days can sometimes be a bit of a boys' club. Ta for everything - you are fantastic. I've also got a few questions, and if you're not too busy, it would be ace if you could take a look: What do you do when you get in a creative rut? I go through periods of writer's block and usually just wait it out- do you have any tips for getting unstuck? Can you recommend any films that you think everyone needs to see? I'm trying to see as many different things as I can, especially things I wouldn't choose myself. What would turn you off completely if you were given a new script to read? Thanks again. Hope you're having a great week! Kate
