CMB1005/BMN1004 Strand D - Genetics: Gene Linkage Practical - Aims

Aims
The primary aim of this pre-practical work is to get you familiar with the tools, genetic concepts and ideas that you will need to complete the 'Hairy Tree Rat' practical and the post-practical assessment on Canvas.
In this practical you will:
  1. Learn how to construct Punnett Squares
  2. Further explore inheritance and genetic distance
Why do we need to understand inheritance?
Inheritance is based on the passing of genes from organism to organism. Understanding how this process occurs, and how it is regulated, helps with our understanding of genetic diseases.
Why do I need to understand how to construct Punnett Squares?
Punnett Squares are a very useful tool for understanding inheritance of genetic traits. With a Punnett Square, which is essentially a matrix, you can work out how genes can be divided between the gametes and how these can be combined to give you the final genotypes (and the phenotype IF you know the dominance relationships).
Why do I need to understand how to calculate genetic distance?
1) Punnett Squares will enable me to......
One answer only.
Only complete crosses with only one characteristic
See what phenotypes the offspring of a cross will have
See what genotypes the offspring off a cross will have
