IPTG can act as an inducer of the [[Lac_operon|lac operon]] in [[Prokaryotes|prokaryotes]]. It binds to the lac repressor protein which stops transcription of this operon, therefore allowing [[Transcription|transcription]] of the [[genes|genes]], including [[beta-galactosidase|beta-galactosidase]], to occur. IPTG mimics [[allolactose|allolactose]].
