= Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON)  =

LHON is a form of vision loss and it is a result of atrophy of the [[Optic nerve|optic nerve]], the nerve that transmits messages containing visual information from the eyes to the brain. LHON is a [[Mitochondrial disease|mitochondrial disease]] in which mutations occur in&nbsp;the MT-ND1, MT-ND4, MT-ND4L, and MT-ND6 [[Genes|genes]].<ref>This is a reference to the website of "National Centre for Advancing Translational Science", "Genetic and Rare diseases Information Centre" section.</ref>&nbsp;It is a disease that affects young adults, predominantly males (very unlikely for LHON to appear in childhood). The vision loss may start in one eye or both eyes at the same time. &nbsp;As the disease progress, the individual will lose his ability to read, drive and recognizing faces.&nbsp;<ref>This is a reference to the website of "U.S. National Library of Medicine"- Genetic Home Reference</ref>

LHON puls has some additional features besides the vision loss such as: the incapability of doing certain movements, tremor and [[Heart arrhythmias|heart arrhythmias]]. Further reseach needs to be made in order for us to obtain a better understanding of LHON.<br>
