A kidney stone is a small lump of crystallised material that can be found obstructing the ureter. Kidney stones are caused by the collection of over-abundant waste materials, such as calcium, in the urine.

Typically, kidney stones don't actually causes any issues as they are passed through the urine stream. However, if one grows too large, it can begin to obstruct the ureter. This can cause severe pain.
