A blunt end[1] is a result of breaking double-stranded DNA with no overhangs or unpaired bases produced. Both strands are of same length due to this factor.

For example:

…..CTTAAG…..

After using restriction enzymes to cut at specific sites:

…..GAA    TTC…..
…..CTT    AAG….
