Aire is an auto immune regulator protein, which plays an essential role in promoting self-tolerance in the thymus.
It is expressed in the thymus and turns on specific genes which would not normally expressed in the thymus. In this way it allows for the deletion of T-cells which recognised tissue-specific antigen, that are being unusually expressed in the thymus.
Major autoimmune syndromes would result from the deficiency of aire.
