Metabolic processes can be divided into 2 main forms: anabolic or catabolic. Through anabolic processes, energy is utilized to build complex molecules using building blocks in our body such as chemicals obtained from food. On the other hand, catabolic pathways break down those cell components and complex molecules in order to release energy to be utilized by the body. Both anabolic and catabolic pathways work synergistically in order to allow the body to take in nutrients from food, and to ensure survival by preventing starvation. Enzymes play a major role in catalysing various metabolic processes.
