Complementation is the event in which two recessive mutatons (with similar phenotypes) result in the restoration of the wildtype phenotype. This phenomenon can only occur if the mutation occurs on different genes. In some (if not more) cases, different mutations can result in similar phenotypic characterisitcs. A complementation test (or cis-trans test) allows us to determine if these mutations that yield similar phenotypes are on the same gene [1].
