HDACs are a group of enzymes which serve to catalyse the deacetylation of lysine residues primarily in histone proteins. Histone deacetylases serve to reverse the action of histone acetylases (HATs). As acetylation serves to increase the expression of genes by recruitment of bromodomains, deacetylation serves to decrease expression, therefore increasing repression[1].
