Clonal Selection gives rise to a diverse of unique antigen receptors. However, self recognising receptors are made as well. If native antigens i.e. on a tissue surface is recognised, antigen could bind and attack native organs. That's why Clonal Deletion is important as during the development of lymphocytes, these self-reacting antigen receptors are removed before they can mature. [1]
