Causes
Viral meningitis is casued by non-polio enteroviruses which are present in the secretions of the mouth as well as being found in stool. They are spread by contact with these substances. It is also the most common type of menningitis but typically less severe than bacterial meningitis[1].
Symptoms
Meningitis is the inflammation of the brain and spinal cord tissue.
Symptoms differ between adults and babies.
Adults and children may have: A high fever/temperature, drowsiness, agitibility, lack of appetite, headache, aching joints and muscles especially neck,dislike of bright light, vomiting/nausea and a lack of energy.
Babies may have: a high temperature/fever, refuse to eat, irritability, lack energy and drowsiness/difficulty waking.
Treatment
Most healthy people will recover from viral meningitis after a week and a half on their own with bedrest although some with compromised immune systems may need to be hospitalised. As it is a viral infection antibiotics will not be effective treatment.
