Post synaptic membranes are involved in the binding of neurotransmitters inducing a reaction in the muscle/nerve cell. The postsynaptic membrane has in its structure, receptors that bind specific neurotransmitters that have been diffused across the synaptic cleft from vesicles in the presynaptic membrane. Aswell as these receptors the postsynaptic membrane has ion channels (controlled by transmitter-bound receptors that they are couple with)  that allow for changes in the membrane potential. [1]
