Bacteria have a wide variety of shapes (different morphologies) and sizes which are important in cell recognition and identification of bacteria. Cocci are spherical in shape and can be arranged:

  • In pairs to form diplococci
  • In chains to form streptococci
  • In grape like structures to form staphylococci
  • In groups of 4 to form tetrads
  • In cubic groups of 8 to form sarcinae
