Used to seperate proteins that have different properties, i.e proteins that are hydrophobic are seperated from those that are hydrophillic.
Proteins with hydrophobic properties bind to the hydrophobic column whilst hydrophilic proteins are eluted out. The columns are packed with lots of beads from which hydrophobic side chains protrude. These hydrophobic side chains then selectively disable proteins containing exposed hydrophobic regions.
To elute the hydrophobic protein, you can make the solvent more hydrophobic.
