Sphingosine is used as a backbone for many fatty acids found in animal cell membranes. It has polar porperties which aid it's interaction with our lipid molecules, this polarity is due to a free hydroxyl group. Sphingosine has two hydroxyl and one amino group attached to a long acyl chain.  [1]
