 Myosin light chain kinase, (MLCK), is used in the contraction of smooth muscle. An increase in Calcium ions activates the MLCK to phosphorylate the myosin regulatory chain. The phosphorylation of this chain causes the myosin tail to uncurl and therefore be able to form filaments within the smooth muscle, these can then interact with actin and contract the muscle.

Myosin light chain kinase (MLCK), is used in the contraction of smooth muscle. An increase in calcium ions activates the MLCK to phosphorylate the myosin regulatory chain. The phosphorylation of this chain causes the myosin tail to uncurl and therefore be able to form filaments within the smooth muscle, these can then interact with actin and contract the muscle [1].
