A reticulocyte is an immature [[Erythrocyte|erythrocyte]] (red blood cell). An erythroblast develops in the bone marrow and extrudes its nucleus at which point it becomes a reticulocyte. The cell then leaves the bone marrow and circulates in the bloodstream for 1-2 days, during which time it loses its mitochondria and ribosomes. Once this process has occured, the cell becomes an erythrocyte [1].
