Deoxygenated blood is carried back to the heart in veins. Deoxygenated blood enters the right side of the heart through the vena cava. It is pumped to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. This is the only artery in the circulatory system that carries deoxygenated blood. Oxygenated blood travels from the lungs to the heart via the pulmonary vein.
