A subatomic particle is a particle which is smaller than an atom and is a component of an atom. For example individual protons, neutrons and electrons are all classed as subatomic particles[1]. However, the subatomic particles are different in terms of their mass, charge and location within the atom. Protons and neutrons make up the majority of the mass of the atom as they both share an equal mass of approximately 1 Da whereas electrons have an approximate mass of 1/2000 Da[2]. Electrons have a negative charge whereas protons have a positive charge and neutrons have no charge. In terms of location, protons and neutrons are within the nucleus whereas the electrons surround the nucleus in orbitals[3].
