The pituitary gland is part of the endocrine system and consists of two lobes: the posterior pituitary gland and the anterior pituiitary gland.
The posterior pituitary gland, otherwise known as the neurohypophysis, is or neural origin. It is not a gland, despite the name, but in fact it is a large cluster of axons from the hypothalamus that terminate behind the anterior pituitary gland. These axons then release hormones into the capillaries of the hypophyseal circulation[1]. such as oxytocin.
