Sodium originally has 11 electrons, however when it interacts with a non-metal it will loose/donate it's outer electron and therefore have 10 electrons and become a sodium ion with a +1 charge. This makes it feel more stable as it means it has a full outer shell.

Sodium originally has 11 electrons, however when it interacts with a non-metal it will loose/donate it's outer electron and therefore have 10 electrons and become a sodium ion with a +1 charge. This makes it feel more stable as it means it has a full outer shell.
