Thrombocytes (platelets) are the type of blood cell. Their main task is to recognise a damaged vessel and make a blood clot. They are produced in the bone marrow by megakaryocytes[1]. They are the smallest of all blood cells with a size of only 20% of the size of a red blood cell[2].
The thrombocytes circulate as small cellular disks measuring 3–4 μm in diameter, with a lifespan of about 10 days[3].
