Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart tissue, allowing the contraction of cardiac muscle in order to pump blood around the body.
There is 2 main types of coronary arteries: left main and right coronary arteries.
- The left main coronary artery (LMCA) which supplies blood to the left atrium and ventricle. The LMCA is branched into the left anterior descending artery (supplies blood to the front-left side) and the circumflex artery (supplies bloodto back-left side).
- The right coronary artery (RCA) which supplies blood to the right atrium and ventricle as well as the atrioventricular node (AVN) and sinoatrial node (SAN). The AVN and SAN are involved in the electrical conduction system which controls heart rate. The RCA also branches into the right posterior descending artery and the acute marginal artery[1].
