Proposed by Australian scientists John Shrine and Lynn Dalgarno the Shine Dalgarno sequence is the ribosome binding site on the mRNA to which the 30s subunit of a ribosome binds to. It is involved in the initation of transcription in Prokaryotes and is the equivalent of the Kozak Consensus in Eukaryotes[1]. The Shine Dalgarno sequence form base pairing with the 16s rRNA to position the 30s subunit on the mRNA. It is made up of purine nucleotides (adenine and guanine) and is usually between 3-9 nucleotides in length. The most common sequence is AGGA [2].
