| There are 20 amino acids with the general structure H2NCHRCOOH. The R group determines the specificity of the amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks of cells as they make [[Proteins|proteins]]. Proteins are chains of amino acids joined together by a peptide bond, through a condensation reaction. Amino acids exist in two isomers: L or D amino acids, however only L-amino acids are found in proteins.
