The intestine is an internal organ that is part of the gastrointestinal tract. The intestine contains two segments, the large intestine and small intestine. The large intestine follows the small intestine. The small intestine is responsible for the absorption of the products of digestion. The endothelial lining of the small intestine is covered in finger like projections called microvilli, these increase the surface area for absorption.
