Glucose transporters are a group of trans-membrane proteins that facilitate the movement of glucose down its concentration gradient. There are 13 types of glucose transporters (GLUT and SGLT). GLUT1-12 are classified by their tissue distribution and special properties. For example GLUT2 can be found on the beta cells on the pancreatic islets cells and are vital as when the glucose enters it will result in the release of insulin, promoting absorption of glucose into adipose tissue and muscle tissue.
