An amino group is a weakly basic functional group ( - NH₂) derived from ammonia. It consists of one atom of nitrogen covalently bonded to two atoms of hydrogen. In aqueous solution an amino group can accept a proton and carry a positive charge. An amino group is a major component of an amino acid.
