Anterior pituitary gland

The anterior pituitary gland consists of endocrine tissue. These tissues secrete hormones into the bloodstream in response to chemical signals from the hypothalamus. It secretes 6 major hormones.

Hormone Major Functions
Thyroid-stimulating Hormone (TSH) Stimulates thyroid hormone release
Follicle-stimulating Hormone (FSH) Stimulates sex steroid production
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Stimulates sex steroid production
Adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) Stimulates cortisol release
Growth Hormone (GH) Stimulates growth
Prolactin Stimulates milk production
