EcoR1
EcoR1 is a restriction endonuclease (or restriction enzyme) that cleaves double stranded DNA at the sequence GTTAAC, making staggered cuts, which leave single stranded complementary overhangs, called ‘sticky ends’[1]. The palindromic sequence, GTTAAC, occurs in DNA approximately every 46 bases, 4.096 Kb[2]. The EcoR1 enzyme is found in some strains of E. Coli, it is used by the cell for defence, to cleave foreign DNA. Other restriction enzymes can be found in other bacteria species.
