Amino Acid Classification

1. Hydrophobic Amino Acid

There are 9 hydrophobic amino acid which are glycine, alanine, proline, valine, leucine, isoleucine, methionine, tryptophan and phenylalanine. The three- dimensional structures of water soluble proteins are stabilised by this tendency of hydrophobic groups to come together, which is called the hydrophobic effect. The different sizes and shapes of these hydrophobic side chains enable them to pack together to form compact structures with little empty space.

2. Polar Amino Acid

There are 6 polar but uncharged amino acids- serine, threonine, tyrosine, asparagine, glutamine and cysteine.
