Okizaki fragments are small strands of DNA formed using the lagging strand of DNA during DNA replication. Due to the lagging strand being 3' to 5' and DNA polymerase running 5' to 3', the DNA sequence on the lagging strand must be produced in sections before being joined together using DNA ligase.
