Cartilage
There are three forms of cartilage found in the human body; hyaline cartilage, fibrocartilage and elastic cartilage.[1] Cartilage consits of chondroblasts cells and chondrocytes cells within a matrix which they secrete.[2] Chondroblast cells mature into chondrocytes
Hyaline Cartilage
Hyaline cartilage has a glassy appearance and is found in the ribs, nose and trachea.[3] Hyaline cartilage matrix mainly contains collagen type ll and aggrecan which add strength to the cartilage.[4][5]
Fibrocartilage
Fibrocartilage is opaque white in appearance.[6] It consists of layers of alternating hyaline cartilage and collagen fibres.[7] Fibrocartilage is found in invertebal disks and ligamnets.[8]
Elastic Cartilage
Elastic cartilage is yellow in appearance and is found in the external ear, larynx and epiglottis.[9] Elastic cartilage occurs in sites that have vibrational functions, such as laryngeal sound wave production and collection of sound waves in the ear.[10]
