This is the term refered to a molecule which an enzyme interactes on[1] with forming an enzyme-sustrate complex, through a lock and key mechanism or induced fit mechanism. this when causes a change in the structure of the enzyme by binding or cleaving parts. The substrate is then released from the enzyme as a product.
