Diakinesis is a process which occurs during the last stage of prophase in meiosis one(prophase one). There are five stages in prophase one(lepotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene and diakinesis) of which diakinesis is the last stage. During this stage chiasma's are present between homologous chromosomes and the seperate chromosomes move apart from each other. Near to the end of Diakinesis the nuclear envelope begins to break down and the mitotic spindle begins to develop.
