According to Alberts et al. 'fibroblasts are the least specialised cells of the connective tissue family.' The cells are responsible for creating collagen and are released upon damage to tissues. Those in the immediate area surrounding the damaged tissue proliferate and move to that site. Here they are stimulated to produce lots of collagen which forms around the damaged tissue and helps to repair it.[1]
