The germ line is a group of cells in multicellular organisms that are not somatic cells.

A cell is considered to be part of  the germ line if they are a haploid gamete or they are a precursor to those haploid gametes- and therefore may be diploid [1] .

In mammals the germ line cells become spermatozoa or ova.
