Metaphase plate

The metaphase plate is an imaginary plane perpendicular to the spindle fibres in the midline region of dividing cells. It is the area in which chromosomes attach in metaphase prior to the anaphase stage of mitosis. The chromosomes attach to the metaphase plate by their centromeres.
