The start codon for any polypeptide chain is always AUG, which codes for Methionine. tRNAMet is bound to AUG and begins polypeptide synthesis. [1]

Many polypeptides, however, have the methionine cleaved off after translation is complete, so AUG codon will not always be present in base sequences.
