Peptidoglycan

Peptidoglycan is a macromolecule made up of alternating Residues of N-acetyl-β-D-glucosamine (NAG) and N-acetylmuramic acid (NAM) joined together by a Glycosidic bond. It is a component of the bacteria outer wall and prevents osmotic lysis from occuring. It is the formation of the cross-links between pentaglycines and tetrapeptides which give peptidoglycan it's stability.
