Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder with a wide array of symptoms. The charity Narcolepsy UK list the symptoms of Narcolepsy as follows:

  • Disturbed Night Time Sleep
  • Excessive Sleepiness
  • Cataplexy
  • Sleep Paralysis
  • Hypnagogic/hypnopomic hallucinations
  • Automatic behaviour
  • Dietary changes
  • Hyper activity[1]

Narcolepsy is a particularly dangerous condition due to sufferers being prone to falling unconscious or asleep during the day. Excessive Sleepiness and Cataplexy are the most defining symptoms of Narcolepsy and this loss of control prevents sufferers from driving. Other activities like operating heavy machinery are often avoided due to the risk posed to one's self and others. Due to eratic sleep pattern of a narcoleptic they will experience symptoms associated with sleep deprivation in addition to the symtpoms unique to Narcolepsy.
