Totipotent stem cells are unspecialised cells that can divide and differentiate into all the types of specialised cells in an organism. This means that not only can totipotent cells develop into any of the three germ layers (endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm), they can also develop into placental cells, giving them the ability to contribute to extraembryonic tissue and consequently to develop into a fetal or adult organism.
