There are two chromosomes responsible for determinig sex of an organism. In some organisms this is the X and Y chromosomes. Females are homogametic with two X chromosomes (XX) and males are heterogametic with one X and one Y chromosome (XY). In other organisms the opposite applies, where females are heterogametic and males homogametic. For this the nomenclature used is zz/zw.
