Botox, is a drug, derived through the purification of botulinum toxin found in the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum. There are eight different strains of this chemical (botox A - H), the most common one being onabotulinumtoxin A or Botulinum Toxin Type A. The neurotoxic property of this drug which inhibits nerve impulses at the neuromuscular junctions, has been greatly useful in the clinical industry. It is used as a treatment for a variety of muscular diseases such as strabismus and blepharospasm as well as, cosmetic procedures to remove glabellar lines, wrinkles crow's feet and etc. Botox is usually administered in the form of an injection, injected directly intradermally or intramuscularly. The effect of botox, however, is only temporary with a span of about 3-6 months depending on the dosage given.
