Celaic disease (sometimes referred to as Coeliac Disease) is an autoimmune disease, its cause is possibly genetic although this has not been confirmed. This occurs when the immune system incorrectly identifies different parts of the gluten molecule as foreign pathogenic material. Therefore, an inappropriate immune response is initiated resulting in damage to different parts of the digestive system, the villi are particularly vulnerable to this autoimmune response and the damage of these structures will lead to a reduction in nutrient uptake from the digestive system.
