Unlike the voltage-gated ion channels present within the cell plasma membrane, the ligand-gated ion channels are controlled through the presence of ligand molecules. It is with the binding of these ligand molecules (e.g. acetylcholine) to the ligand-gated ion channel that causes a conformational change; resulting in the opening or closing of that channel. [1].
