A silent mutation is a mutation in a nucleotide sequence, which does not change the sequence of amino acids. Even regions outside the coding sequence could be affected by a silent mutation. In non-coding regions in DNA, the nucleotide sequence does not have bases needed for the protein required.
Silent mutations do not affect the phenotype as there are no change in amino acid sequence.
